High School Diploma - Betty Outten Learning Center - The Long Beach School for Adults

The Betty Outten Learning Center

The Betty Outten Learning Center (OLC) is a high-tech, yet old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse!  Books, materials, computers, teachers, and aides are provided. The OLC helps students with diverse schedules, learning styles, educational needs and abilities. Each year over 1,000 students are welcomed to this open entry/exit high school diploma and GED program. Here, students may study at their own pace under the guidance of teachers and aides.

Who may attend the OLC?

Almost anyone who is motivated to learn is eligible to attend the OLC! All students must be able to speak and to read English at an appropriate level (If you are unable to do this, don't despair! We can refer you to the Literacy Center or one of our many ESL classes!).

Where is the OLC located?

The OLC is located at Long Beach School for Adults, Willow Campus (click here for map).

When is the OLC open?

Morning Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday

Evening Hours:  3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday

How can the OLC help me?
The OLC will custom-tailor an educational path that leads to your goal. For instance...

  • Do you want to earn your high school diploma? Every course you need can be taken in the OLC. We can also help you prepare for the CAHSEE.

  • Do you need a GED certificate? The OLC offers GED test preparation which includes practice tests and one-on-one tutoring.

  • Do you need to pass an employment exam? We've helped many people pass and excel on such exams as the ASVAB, CBEST, SAT, and more!

  • Do you want to gain computer and technology skills? The OLC's computer lab has the latest software and hardware to bring you up to speed!

How does the OLC work?
You can work independently at your own pace; staff is available to help when you need assistance. All materials are provided and available anytime the OLC is open. There is no minimum attendance requirement and no homework! Credits are earned when course requirements are completed.

How much does all this cost?
Please review the LBSA information flyer for OLC registration and class fees (click here)
