New ways to support our program

The Long Beach Family Literacy Program, located at the Long Beach School for Adults, serves families with children ages 1 – 8. Adults and children learn side-by-side, two generations at a time. The four components of the program are:

Adult Education – Adults can take English-as-a-Second Language, GED or High School Diploma preparation, ROP classes, and even Adult Basic Education classes. Parents must commit to completing a minimum of 48 hours of adult education each month.

Early Childhood Education – Children ages 1-2 become participants in our toddler program. Operated by Head Start, our youngest learners spend time playing with toys and partaking in activities that are age and developmentally appropriate. Children ages 3-4 are students in our onsite Head Start program. All Head Start children leave the program ready to succeed in Kindergarten. Children ages 5-8 are served onsite at local elementary schools.

Parent Education – Each week, parents gather with a specially trained teacher to learn strategies and techniques to assist their child’s language and literacy development. In addition, parents work on family issues and learn about valuable community resources. Parent Education also focuses on the world of work, and offers a link to the City’s Career Transition Center.

Parent and Child Interactive Literacy Activities – This special time is dedicated just for parents and their children to come together once per week and play, learn, and develop crucial literacy skills. This time is also set aside for parents to practice the tools they have learned in Parent Education.

Family Literacy is offered Monday through Thursday in the morning, and Monday through Friday in the afternoon. There is no cost to families, and assistance is provided via bus passes for families needing transportation to and from the Long Beach School for Adults.
