Course Descriptions - English as a Second Language

Distance Learning - Multi-Level

This course is designed to meet the needs of both ESL learners who are unable to attend regularly-scheduled classes and also those who want to supplement and accelerate their learning in class by doing additional assignments at home. This distance education program allows learners to study at home via technology and other instructional materials at times convenient to them. Learners enrolled in the program check out video, DVD, and/or audio-taped materials with accompanying text to practice and improve listening, reading, and writing skills. Learners meet weekly with a certified ESL instructor to review their work.

Language functions and language forms are integrated into listening, reading, writing, and speaking activities, all designed to improve student ability to take and pass the USCIS exam. Through lectures, individual and pair/group participation, the student is exposed to the language needed to prepare for the reading, writing, and interview portion of the USCIS exam.

Intermediate (Low-High)

This course is designed for students who are able to use English to function independently in most familiar situations and who can read simplified materials on familiar topics and write on personal topics. Emphasis is on fluency and communication. Students are encouraged to self-monitor and self-correct. Course content is relevant to student daily life and is determined through on-going needs assessment. Cultural aspects, such as rules of etiquette common in routine social situations in U.S. culture, are taught explicitly by focusing on comparing and contrasting rules from cultures of native countries and U.S. culture.

Intermediate Conversation (Low-High)

This course is designed for students to develop their communication skills (listening and speaking) in English by discussing real-life situations and problems. Students work in small groups and as part of a whole class on the conversation activities. Because there are no right or wrong answers, students are encouraged to talk about and compare ideas/values with those of their classmates. Discussion of problems and development of problem solving and critical thinking skills are essential components of each lesson. By listening to and considering the ideas of others, students will broaden their understanding of other cultures.
