MISSION OF PTA

To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation. 



I. PTA PURPOSE 

To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship. 
To raise the standards of home life. 
To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. 
To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth. 
To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.

PTA meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month unless otherwise noted. Meetings are held in the Library.

V. PTA JOB DESCRIPTIONS 

PTA Board 


President: Oversees activities of the PTA; plans and directs PTA meetings; attends monthly council meetings; the Executive Board reports directly to the President. 
EVP Programs: Works closely with the President; steps in for President if unable to fulfil duties. Oversees PTA programs and coordinates with Committee Chairman to plan and coordinate events. Creates PTA directory. 
VP Membership: Responsible for collecting membership fees for the PTA. Works with the PTA President to determine the fee each year. (The fee needs to be voted on by the board when it is changing.) Need to set up a display table on registration day. Have posters to get the attention of parents. (Option: have an envelope for each student on registration day that parents can return to school). 
VP Hughesette: Compiles and edits articles for the school newspaper, which is then distributed to Hughes families. 
VP Hospitality: Provides light refreshments for PTA meetings and organizes teacher luncheons (about three) throughout year. 
VP Ways & Means: Coordinates school wide fundraiser(s)to raise money for PTA programs 
Recording Secretary: The secretary takes minutes at each PTA meeting, reads the minutes from the previous meeting and keeps the PTA agenda/minutes notebook current. 
Financial Secretary: Assists treasurer in processing monies received by PTA. 
Treasurer: Maintains the checkbook for the PTA. Writes checks according to the budget and keeps a total of money spent for each itemized budget category. Works closely with the PTA President to prepare the budget. Prepares a budget to present to the PTA Board and also needs to present the budget at the PTA meetings. 
Auditor: Responsible for auditing PTA books twice every year. 
Historian: Photographs PTA events and prepares annual report of total volunteer hours. 
Corresponding Secretary: Does all corresponding for PTA as directed by President. 
Parliamentarian: Becomes familiar with PTA by-laws and attends meetings to help clarify questions regarding procedures; Oversees the formation and first meeting of the Nominating Committee. 

PTA Committees 

8th Grade Promotion: This Committee consists of the 8th grade teachers, PTA Committee members, and the PTA President. Set up a meeting with the 8th grade team and the PTA President in February. Meet to discuss and decide upon who will be responsible for the music, decorations, programs, class gift, video presentation, pictures for the video presentation, speakers, reservation of a church or facility to hold the graduation. Meet again in March and April. 
Assemblies: Works with teachers to coordinate school assemblies for each grade. 
Book Fair: Fall and Spring book drive to acquire books and other materials for our newly expanded Media Center. 
Community Outreach: Organizes events throughout the school year to assist not only the children of our own school, but also the children and families of our neighboring communities as we try to teach our kids about the importance of helping and appreciating other people, our environment and our community. The goal is to involve the kids as much as possible with these projects. 
Easy Money [recycling/e-Scrip/labels]: Coordinates and advertise easy money programs. 
Founder’s Day: Plans and coordinates program to celebrate PTA’s birthday, February 17th, by honoring past and present PTA leaders. 
Health & Safety: Plans and coordinates Red Ribbon Week activities. 
Legislation: Keeps PTA members informed of important political legislation involving all students. 
Parent Education: Plans and coordinates speakers and/or events for parents. 
Reflections: Plans National PTA fine arts program by distributing information, collecting entries and honoring student participants.
