Millikan, Lakewood Earn Major Grant

10/05/07

The Long Beach Unified School District has received a $2.5 million U.S. Department of Education Smaller Learning Communities Grant. The grant will expand and enhance smaller learning communities at Lakewood and Millikan high schools.

Both Lakewood and Millikan offer students a choice of academies, or smaller learning communities, emphasizing business and technology, science, global education and the arts.

The two high schools will use the latest grant to align their coursework with the California State University A-G entrance requirements. Each school also will use funds to continue their expansion of Advanced Placement offerings, and to increase the number of students who take these courses.

Smaller learning communities have been found to result in higher course-passing rates, better attendance and fewer suspensions.
