In Summer 2011, GEAR UP offered a special academic program to prepare students for success in college preparatory coursework. The program was for incoming 10th graders, and it was designed to give them a head start on classes for the 2011-12 school year. It was another step toward making their college plans a reality.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a competitive federal grant that aims to "increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education." It serves an entire cohort of students from middle school through high school. At the Long Beach Unified School District, it is dedicated to the Class of 2014 at the six comprehensive high schools: Cabrillo, Jordan, Lakewood, Millikan, Polytechnic, and Wilson.
