Academic Interventions

Each school keeps records of systematic intervention for students not exhibiting a normal pattern of progress. Interventions address lack of growth toward the attainment of standards, with documentation starting at kindergarten and at each grade before the target grades 1, 3, 5 and 8.

Intervention at Kindergarten

• Upon enrollment, kindergartners' basic skills are assessed at each school.
• A two-week Pre-Kindergarten readiness program will be required for students not meeting criteria.

Intervention at Grades 1 through 5

• Students who do not pass grade level reading assessments and math fact assessments demonstrating proficiency will be required to attend a summer tutorial or intersession.
• Students who do not perform at grade level after participating in required tutorial sessions will be required to participate in an after-school-tutoring program in grades 1 through 5. They may also be assigned to an all-day literacy program that includes math instruction.

Interventions at Grade 6 through 7

Sixth and seventh grade students who on multiple indicators are determined at-risk of not passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be required to 1) be enrolled in a two-period literacy course or participate in a mathematics intervention program and 2) attend a specialized summer school or intersession program designed to address their deficiencies in reading and mathematics.

Interventions at Grade 8

Eighth grade students who on multiple indicators are determined at-risk of not passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be required to 1) be enrolled in a two-period literacy course or participate in a mathematics intervention program in eighth grade and 2) attend a specialized summer school or intersession program designed to address their deficiencies in reading and mathematics prior to enrolling in grade nine.

Interventions at Grade 9

Ninth grade students who on multiple indicators are determined at-risk of not passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be 1) enrolled in a two-period literacy intervention course and/or stretch algebra (Algebra AB-first year of a two-year course) during the regular school day, 2) enrolled in an extra period to receive supplemental support in mathematics to insure proficiency in algebra, and 3) be required to attend summer school immediately following the ninth grade where they will receive support to assist them in achieving proficiency in reading and mathematics standards on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

Interventions at Grade 10

Tenth grade students who on multiple indicators are determined at risk of not passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be enrolled in a two-period literacy intervention course and/or stretch algebra (Algebra CD-second year of a two-year course) program during the regular school day.

Parent notification of and involvement in prescribed intervention and/or retention programs are required by Education Code 48070.5(e). The support and approval of parent/guardians are extremely important to a student's success; however, in cases of retention, the final decision shall be that of school authorities.
