Henry Elementary School two-way bilingual immersion teacher Sylvia Padilla was recently honored as the California Association for Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year.
"I'm honored and I'm totally humbled by it," said Padilla, who teaches kindergarten.
In two-way immersion, English-speaking students are placed in classes with Spanish-speaking students learning English. Padilla said 60 percent of her students are English speakers learning Spanish.
The Long Beach chapter of CABE nominated Padilla for the statewide honor.
In addition to Padilla's top teacher award, DeMille Middle School was honored as one of only three schools in the state to receive CABE's Seal of Excellence for its successful dual language immersion program.
