The enrollment increases of the past decade appear to be continuing without letup according to the latest tally of students in the Long Beach Unified School District.
By the tenth day of school, enrollment climbed to a new record of 96,494 students, up 2,149 from last year's 94,345 after the first two weeks of school. Elementary, middle and high school levels all reported substantial increases.
The new figures follow a trend of unrelenting growth over the past two decades. In 1980, local schools enrolled just over 56,000 students. In 1990, they enrolled about 71,500.
