Krystal Cheek, a fifth grade teacher at Fremont Elementary School, was selected as a statewide Teacher Leadership Award winner for her service to her classroom, local teachers and a California network of history-social science educators. Only eight winners were selected throughout California. She was honored Nov. 6 at UCLA during an awards dinner for the California History-Social Science Project. Cheek has 30 years of K-12 experience. She has worked in the history curriculum office here, as a beginning teacher (BTSA) coach, and coordinator of student teachers. She has also served as a teacher leader for the History Project at Cal State Dominguez Hills for more than 12 years, developing curriculum and conducting professional development.
