The Wilson High School water polo team took to the water for its playoff games this fall with an "X" in green tape over the left ear of each player's cap. Each mark is a tribute to swim coach Klaus Barth, who is undergoing treatment at UCLA for a brain tumor.
Why green? One of the experimental drugs Barth takes has the side effect of giving his skin a greenish tint. Players visited him before the playoffs and, knowing his resilient sense of humor, kidded him about his new look.
Players then began their personal tribute with the "X" on their caps. Soon they were also sporting green T-shirts before each game.
"All the kids have been amazing," Barth's wife, Shari, said. "The love and support they've shown has meant a lot to him."
