Eight elementary schools recently earned the S.T.A.R. Elementary School Award in recognition of superb academic performance.
Bixby, Emerson, Gompers, Grant, Henry, MacArthur, Naples and Whittier elementary schools all received the honor this year, bestowed by the Elementary Office. They join previous winners Addams, Burbank, Lafayette, Los Cerritos, Madison, Signal Hill and Willard elementary schools in this recognition.
To receive a S.T.A.R., which stands for Student Success+Terrific Teaching=Academic Results, a school's students must meet improvement and achievement criteria in three areas:
• Academic Performance Index (API)--The school must double its Spring 2000 growth target and exceed a total API of 560.
• English Language Learner (ELL) Performance--Students must show significant pre/post gains in both Math and Reading SAT 9 totals.
• Performance Assessments--Students must show high ranking of pre/post total gains on two of the three areas of reading benchmarks, open-ended writing and basic math facts.
