Enrollment in the Long Beach Unified School District climbed to a new record of 94,257 students in October, up 2,551 from last year. Elementary, middle and high school levels all reported increases.
The new figures follow a trend of unrelenting growth over the past two decades. In 1980, local schools enrolled just over 56,000 students. In 1990, they enrolled about 71,500.
This year's increase surpassed the district's projection by just 128 students. Further projections call for enrollment to jump to nearly 103,000 students by 2004.
More than 140 portable classrooms were added to campuses during the summer, and the school district is moving ahead with several construction projects to build new classrooms and schools.
