Three Long Beach Unified School District schools are winners of the first annual Governor's Reading Award.
Hudson School and Gant and Madison elementary schools were among 400 schools selected statewide for their students reading the most pages during the six-month competition. The schools will receive $5,000 each for reading a combined 4 million pages.
Students were permitted to choose any book provided that it was approved by their parents and teachers.
Students in grades K-2 read independently or with their parent/guardian or teacher and were permitted to read the same book more than once.
The final outcome was based on the number of pages read by students. Pupils in grades 4-8 counted the actual number of pages read. Pupils in K-3 counted the number of books read and teachers converted from number of books to pages.
