Avalon K-12 School on Catalina Island reopened Monday following two days of closure over concerns about the effects of last week's heavy rainfall.
The school closed Thursday, Jan. 21 and Friday, Jan. 22 as a precaution due to the threat of mud and debris flow from rain-soaked hillsides. Schools on the mainland remained open.
The school district monitored soil saturation and rainfall forecasts to determine when to reopen the school, which serves about 640 students.
Catalina Island has received more than 10 inches of rain over the past four months, which, combined with rain forecasts, prompted the closure.
