Avalon K-12 School on Catalina will remain closed this Friday, Jan. 22 as a precaution due to the threat of mud and debris flow from rain-soaked hillsides. Schools on the mainland remained open.
Avalon had first closed a day earlier due to heavy rains. The school district continues to monitor soil saturation and rainfall forecasts to determine when to reopen the school, which serves about 640 students.
Catalina Island has received more than 10 inches of rain over the past four months, which, combined with rain forecasts, prompted this week's closures.
A decision on whether to reopen the school on Monday will not be made until Sunday, Jan. 24. Parents and staff will be notified.
